I used to take walks all the time when I was in college. I was always on the go, rushing from one class to another, one meeting to another. My walks in college were not what my walks are like now. Back then, I wasn’t present while walking and viewed each walk as a means to get from one place to another and nothing more. I was also always in a rush and rarely walked to clear my mind.
As I have gotten older, I realized that walks are a mood booster for me. I take one walk everyday because it calms me down and puts things into perspective.
I don’t listen to music or a podcast while walking because I find that I am more present listening to the sounds of nature and my own thoughts.
Looking up and admiring the colors of the sky makes me feel like my everyday problems are nothing to worry about.
Deep breathing naturally calms my nervous system and breathing in fresh, crisp, outdoor air feels so good.
Moving my body is something that I know will put me into a positive headspace and walking is a great way for me to get the same feel good feelings that yoga and lifting weights brings me.
